Help Sri Lankan rural communities in need of drinking water

A message from our organiser…

Hi, my name is Lewmini Pitigala. I hope you can take a few seconds out of your busy schedule to read this. I spent my formative years in both Anuradhapura and Colombo, Sri Lanka, but now am living in Canberra, Australia. Both living in Sri Lanka, and being a part of the wider Sri Lankan community, has made me aware of some of the tough situations’ rural communities face back home. People of all ages in these disadvantaged areas are unable to have some of life’s essentials and are suffering greatly because of it. So, I decided to embark on a project which gives back to those in need. We all have the right to safe drinking water. But unfortunately, rural Sri Lankan communities do not have access to such resources and are vulnerable to fatal health complications. My initial project, with the help of samajasathkara.lk, is to provide remote communities with Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filters to provide safe drinking water. With your help, together we can help these underserved communities.

We are initially planning to donate a RO water filter to the school to help bridge their scarcity In resources and help with the prevention of kidney diseases.

Help Sri Lankan rural communities in need of drinking water

By Lewmini Pitigala, assisting with SamajaSathkara.lk

Safe and readily available drinking water is essential for all of us. In rural and disadvantaged communities in Sri Lanka, their water is sourced from reservoirs, irrigation channels and ground water. Unfortunately, malpractices in agricultural operations, such as waste disposal and overdose application, have led to all these channels being polluted with traces of fertilizers, pesticides and heavy metals (eg. Cadmium). This has a dire impact on all members of these communities, young and old, as the consumption of contaminated water has caused fatal conditions such as chronic renal failure (CRF), diarrhoeal diseases, and other significant health repercussions. They need our support especially during these challenging times amongst the global COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we can achieve this with your kind donations. Please donate! Your dollar is worth more than you think.

WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAFE, FRESH WATER TO DRINK.

Our Project Plan

With your kind donations, our pilot project of providing 4 RO water filters to underserved communities can be achieved. We have prioritised our donations to remote areas which need it most, by donating to the areas of Anuradhapura & Puttalam. These 4 planned water filters will be donated to communal areas within these remote regions including a school, pre-school, temple and pregnant womens’ clinic. With the anticipated success of our pilot project, we hope to extend our donations for various causes including providing solar powered light for children studying at home and providing sewing machines as a means of self-employment.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Filters

In Sri Lankan communities, drinking water provided from various channels has little to no treatment, as people in these areas cannot afford treatment facilities. However, water quality in many parts of Sri Lanka is poor and is not suitable for drinking. Drinking contaminated water has caused kidney diseases, diarrhoeal diseases and other dire health complications among poor people. Our solution is to supply Revers Osmosis (RO) filters and water tanks to these poor communities. Your generous donations will be used for these projects.

  • RO Filter – Rs.49,500 – Rs.56,000
(Dependent on the water quality) + transport+1yr of scheduled maintenance. Additional pressure pump (Rs. 3000) may need to be funded for dependent on the water pressure.

The selected Locations of Water filter installation

We look forward to making these donations to the following locations: Permission has been obtained from those locations and donations are expected to be made after the water condition is checked.
